Southern Utah University Joins COPLAC

On June 23rd 2012, the COPLAC Board voted unanimously to approve Southern Utah University for membership in the organization. As Utah’s designated Public Liberal Arts and Sciences University, SUU becomes COPLAC’s twenty-seventh member institution and the second campus located in the Intermountain West. The COPLAC Governing Board voted to approve membership for Southern Utah University at the organization’s Annual Summer Meeting, hosted by The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Located in Cedar City, SUU was founded as a teacher training institution over a century ago and has evolved into a distinctive campus with a core focus on the liberal arts and sciences. SUU’s Academic Mission Statement calls for the campus community “to provide a personalized, integrative, and experiential learning environment designed to prepare students to become fully engaged and productive members of society”. The University’s general studies program includes an experiential education requirement and a capstone project. Credit for experiential education can be earned through undergraduate research (a COPLAC distinctive), community engagement, leadership engagement, creativity and innovation engagement as well as other creative options. Cedar City is home to the Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Southern Utah Museum of Art, and the Utah Summer Games. A number of national parks and recreation areas surround the city and campus.
